Two recent signals, not a renovation quote
On 29 September 2026, Istat reported that producer prices for residential and non-residential buildings were 2.9% higher in August than a year earlier; the monthly figure was unchanged. This is a price index, not an estimate for renovating a particular home.
On 20 October, Istat reported that construction output fell 2.9% from July and 2.2% year-on-year on the calendar-adjusted index. Prices and output measure different things; neither, on its own, tells you what work on your property will cost.
Why your property’s costs may differ
A national index does not automatically account for location, the building’s condition, site access, chosen finishes or any work needed on systems or structure. Even nearby properties can require very different scopes of work.
The producer-price series tracks prices across a broad construction category. It is not a turnkey price list and does not promise that an individual quote will move by the same amount. Use it as context, not as a percentage to apply to a listing price.
Build a project-based budget
Before making an offer, arrange a technical inspection and request a written description of the required work. A useful quote should separate tasks, specified materials and finishes, unresolved items and exclusions, so competing proposals can be compared on a like-for-like basis.
Clarify what site management includes and which assumptions affect the schedule. Do not treat an early estimate as a final financial commitment: conditions uncovered during the work may require further checks and decisions.
Keep a margin and check locally
Allow financial room for uncertain items without relying on a universal contingency percentage. The appropriate margin depends on the survey findings, property condition and how fully the project has been defined; revise the budget as better information becomes available.
In Puglia and elsewhere in Italy, ask the appointed technician and contractor to assess the specific property and the process relevant to its municipality. National indices are useful context, but they do not replace professional, tax or administrative review.
